Halloween
Halloween turned out to be a very special
event at AC this year. Besides having the usual
booths where students get their food, there was
also a costume contest. This was a first for the
student body, and, as you can see, it was a huge
success.

SNEA is one of the largest organizations on campus with over 170
members. The members are education majors — elementary,
secondary, and hearing impaired. This year was a busy one. The club
had several guest speakers, including Joyce Proctor Beaman, Dr.
David M. Webb, Bruce Beezer from North Carolina State, J. Arthur
Taylor from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, and
Ms. Peggy Mills from East Carolina. During National Education Week
(Nov. 13-19), the members honored their professors each day with
tokens of appreciation for their fine job of instruction.
This year eight members attended the state convention held in
Charlotte, NC on April 14-15. Members attended a cluster meeting in
Tarboro and hosted one in January at Atlantic Christian. The club also
held a bake sale to sponsor Rose West who attended the National
Convention in Philadelphia, PA.

Alpha Chi National Honor Fraternity is the official honor
organization of our college. Membership is based upon scholarship
and each semester an initiation ceremony is conducted to recognize
the achievement of the new members.
The purpose of Alpha Chi is to promote scholarship, leadership and
character. In keeping with its purpose, the NC Gamma Chapter of
Alpha Chi awarded for the first time a $200 scholarship to Rebecca
Hodge, a junior member who best exemplified these criteria. It is
hoped that the award winner will assist the organization in promoting
academic excellence within our college campus and in the
community.

DESIDERATA
Go placidly amid the noise & haste, & remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as
possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly & clearly
and listen to others, even the dull & ignorant; they too have their story. * Avoid loud and
aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may
become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy
your achievements as well as your plans. * Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons
strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. * Be yourself. Especially, do not feign
affection; neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is
perennial as the grass. * Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things
of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress
yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome
discipline, be gentle with yourself. * You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the
stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is
unfolding as it should. * Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and
whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. *
With all the sham and drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive
to be happy. * * *
